They represent the three battalions of the all-conquering Spanish Armada. Tommy Robredo, the emerging teenage talent; Juan Carlos Ferrero, the youthful twentysomething who has already staked a claim in the top 10; and Alex Corretja, the enduring veteran who still packs a punch.
Spain’s depth of talent far exceeds all other nations and was a key factor in its first Davis Cup win in 2000. Sixteen Spanish players finished 2001 ranked in the top 100 – double that of the United States, and far more than France and Argentina (tied for second with nine).
But world tennis can no longer be measured by player rankings and the number of tournaments won. The Spaniards have injected their own brand of style, charm and personality into the ATP circuit. Here, Ferrero, Robredo and Corretja showcase some of that style.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Alberto Martin will replace the injured Juan Carlos Ferrero on the Spanish Davis Cup team that plays the United States next month.
Ferrero hurt his right foot in his third-round loss to Romania’s Adrian Voinea on Monday at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Key Biscayne, Fla., and will be out for at least three weeks.

The little man they call ‘Mosquito’ is looking forward to defending the Dubai Duty Free Men’s Open title he won last year – and to becoming the first player in the 10 year history of the tournament to win it twice. Juan Carlos Ferrero beat all-comers in 2001 to claim the handsome Silver Dhow trophy in the men’s week event at the two-week Dubai Tennis Championships.
It was a victory that set him up for the most successful season of his career, with Ferrero finishing as world number five, the highest placing for a Spaniard since Alex Corretja, another Dubai champion, climbed as high as three after his win in Dubai in 1998.

It may not be much of a surprise to see a Spaniard among the contenders to pick up the major honors on the ATP circuit, but a Spanish victory on hard courts was a rare occurrence until recent years.
As the US Open begins on Monday, young prodigy Juan Carlos Ferrero will be hoping to become the first Spaniard to win the title since Manuel Orantes in 1975, and with four titles and a 47-13 record in 2001, he is well equipped to do so.

No. 8 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero came from behind to beat top-seed and the world’s top clay court player Gustavo Kuerten 3-6, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, to capture his biggest career title at the Tennis Masters Series Roma.
The 3 hour, 4 minute battle might be an early championship preview of what to expect at Roland Garros next month. Kuerten came into the final with a 24-1 record on clay this season while Ferrero was 16-1. The two played in the semifinals at Roland Garros last year and the Brazilian prevailed in five sets.
