His blog post from 8th March – Vamos España!!

Hello everyone. As you may already know Spain beat Serbia today in the Davis Cup, so I would like to congratulate Rafa, Feli, Tomy and David and of course Albert Costa for his first win as the Spanish captain. Yesterday I went to watch David’s match against Jokovic and he played a great and very solid match. After that I had to come back to the academy to do some physical training. On Monday I will see my doctor and he will check my wrist. We will also decide if I can finally start on Monday to hit a little bit. I would like to tell you something more about tournaments and matches as I was doing in South America but we all need to wait for the moment. I really hope I can give you good news very soon. I also hope you are doing well…..please keep writing messages.
Regards for everyone from Villena!!

J.C

His blog post from 12th March – Primer torneo: Casablanca

I withdrew from Indian wells since I didnt have that much time to get ready for the tournament. Even though, I dont feel any pain and the recovering has been very positive we rather waiting and prepare well the tournaments on clay in Casablanca and Montecarlo.

Besides the physical training I have been doing for the last two weeks, I have already started practicing tennis on the court. I hit with carlos Boluda for the last few days here at the academy and I didnt feel any pain in either my wrist or my hip so Im very happy and motivated about continuing training and getting ready for the tournaments.

I already played tennis this morning and I will do some more physical training this afternoon.

I hope all of you are doing well….I have to go to eat now sorry!, some friends are waiting for me..

Best regards.
J.C

Spain Davis Cup captains Jordi Arrese, Juan Avendaño and José Perlas are counting on the 24-year old to perform at “La Cartuja”, even though the 2003 Roland Garros champion finished a season to forget 45 days ago.

After a 2004 marred by various ailments to his hips, knees, and shoulders, Ferrero hasn’t competed since the Madrid Masters which has raised concerns about his fitness and state of mind.

Spain’s coaches are doing whatever they can to raise up Ferrero’s confidence.
In order to be able to measure his curent level the former world number one have been practicing with team mate Carlos Moya who is great shape.

On Saturday, the Spanish pair played two sets and they were tied at one set apiece, however on Monday Moya crushed Ferrero 6-1.

On the same day, Antonio Martinez scheduled a hard training session working a huge range of shots and by sunset Ferrero seemed to have regained confidence ahead of his first singles match on Friday.

DOUBLES A WORRY THAN A-ROD
Spain coach Juan Avendano told Spanish newspaper Marca that the Bryan brothers would be the hardest obstacle.

“For me, the doubles will be the most difficult rubber – on paper they are more experienced as a duo,” he said.

Avendano denied that his team had given up on overturning the big-serving Roddick.

“It is true that we have more possibilities against [Mardy] Fish but we have to think about winning against Roddick and in the doubles,” said Jose Perlas, another of the national coaches.

“We think we can take all five points.”

10 November 2004

Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero is aiming to end his disappointing season on a high by helping his country win the Davis Cup against the USA.

Ferrero has been named in the Spain team to contest this year’s final in Seville, along with Tommy Robredo, Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal in what is an unchanged side to that which triumphed over France in the semi-finals.

Ferrero, a former French Open winner and a world number one for several weeks at the end of last season, has suffered a miserable campaign, which culminated in his second round exit at the Madrid Masters.

The Spaniard then opted out of last week’s tournament in Paris to prepare for the Davis Cup, even though those preparations have not been without their problems.
“I have had a bit of a fever, although I will be OK in a day or so,” he said.

“It’s obvious this has not been the best year of my career. I started off well in Australia and Rotterdam, but then all of the problems started.

“First of all I got chicken pox, which complicated everything, and after that I had problems with my ribs.

“After that it was very hard to pick things up again.”

Spain captain Juan Avendano is full of optimism ahead of the final.

“This is the best team we could have picked for the final,” said Avendano.

“Even though the end of the season has not been kind to our players, we hope they all recover their form.

“There are plenty of reasons to think we can win.”

11 April 2004

Carlos Moya’s 63 64 defeat of Sjeng Schalken in the fifth rubber was the icing on the cake for the host nation, cementing a 4-1 defeat over the Netherlands. Earlier today Juan Carlos Ferrero secured Spain’s place in September’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinal with a win over Martin Verkerk in the fourth live rubber.

The fifth rubber was the first opportunity for Schalken to take to the court despite having the highest ranking in the Dutch team. It was a tactical decision that Dutch captain Tjerk Bogstra made on Thursday after he decided that Schalken was not ready to play at his best level on Friday.
Schalken admitted that it was difficult to sit on the sidelines and watch his compatriots take defeat, “It was very hard to watch the match out there today, I was really into it and it was disappointing because Martin played so well. But it was good Davis Cup tennis and a great match. It was very hard for me to go out and play after we were 3-1 down.”

Carlos Moya was the first to put a point on the board for Spain with a confident 62 75 64 victory over Martin Verkerk in the opening singles rubber. World No.3 Juan Carlos Ferrero followed in similar fashion giving Spain a 2-0 lead when he raced to a 62 62 64 win over Raemon Sluiter. When Spain led the doubles two games to one on Saturday, an easy victory by the Spanish looked very likely. But as if answering a call from the Dutch camp, the heavens opened and rain forced play to be delayed until Sunday.

The Netherlands used the break to re-group and came to the Bull Ring on Sunday as a transformed team. Their pumped up doubles duo of Martin Verkerk and John Van Lottum wrapped up the doubles rubber in five sets 36 26 63 62 62 to keep Dutch hopes alive.

Much to the delight of the travelling Dutch supporters Verkerk took the world No. 3 to an epic five sets, but he was unable dominate the clay court specialist and Ferrero delivered the decisive point with a 64 67(5) 46 75 61 victory.

Ferrero was impressed by Verkerk’s fighting spirit, “When I watched him come out and play the doubles today, I knew he was playing better. But really I don’t think that he played so bad in his first singles on Friday, it was just the Carlos played so well against him and really controlled the match not letting him play his game.”

Having disposed of the Netherlands, Ferrero is already looking ahead to his country’s semifinal clash with France at home to be held September 24-26, “It will be tough to beat France, but we have shown this weekend that we have a great team and that we are also tough to beat, so we are looking forward to playing them.”

One of the three Spanish captains Jordi Arrese was also pleased to be meeting France in the semifinals, “We are very happy to be playing France because it is important for us to have a home tie. Even though Switzerland has the No. 1 player and are perhaps a better team than France we did not want to play away. We are expecting it to be a very tough.”

If Spain should need a secret weapon in their semifinal clash with France then there is every chance that 17-year-old Majorcan Rafael Nadal will be it. While he didn’t play a huge role in Spain’s defeat of the Netherlands, Arrese admitted that he is not a natural doubles player. “I asked him to play doubles here this weekend, but really he is a singles player. He didn’t get to play singles here but he is a great asset to have on the team and as each month goes by he will get better and better.”

If Nadal’s recent progression on the circuit is anything to go by, then maybe we will see Nadal play a Davis Cup singles role. Before arriving in Palma to join his team, Nadal had pulled off the biggest victory of his young life, after he disposed of the top-ranked Roger Federer in the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open. While his partnership with Robredo in the doubles was not successful in clinching the tie for Spain, Nadal’s eager display of confidence underlined the depth of the Spanish Davis Cup side.

Nadal says that his powerful backhand comes from his ability to play tennis with either his right or left hand. He grew up playing with both hands and when forced to make a decision, chose to be a left-handed player as he felt they were the most difficult to beat. However, his right arm is still his strongest, enabling him to power down his double backhand.

Spain have beaten France in four of its five Davis Cup meetings, but with the likely return of Sebastian Grosjean, the 2001 Davis Cup champions will be tough to beat.

9 April 2004

The Spanish team are in confident mood as they prepare to face Holland in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup in Palma de Mallorca.

And Juan Carlos Ferrero is looking forward to playing on the court where he has fond memories.

The Valencia-born player enjoyed his first ATP triumph in Palma and will now be hoping to repeat his success there, this time for his country.
“It is very nice to return to the court where I won my first ATP tournament in 1999,” said the former world number one.

“I am feeling optimistic and have overcome a few muscle strains. I have been able to train without problems in the last few weeks and I am feeling fine.

“It is always special when I come back here. Above all, you can hear the ball resound after it has been hit on this court, although it may be difficult to with the stadium full.”

Carlos Moya, from Mallorca, has picked up four ATP titles playing in front of his home fans and is expecting an exciting spectacle.

“Holland has two players in the first 20 in the world and they can win against anybody,” he said.

“But for me, I know this court very well and have enjoyed a lot of success here.

“Playing in Spain we are accustomed to being favourites and we are used to the pressure so I don’t believe that will be a problem, particularly for me as I have played with it for a number of years.”

Jordi Arrese, one of three captains along with Juan Avenano and Josep Perlas, believes when the team plays in Spain it has no one to fear.

“Playing at home and on hard courts, Spain is the favourite against any team in the world,” he said.

“But this does not mean that we have more pressure as it is assumed by everybody and reflects the difference in the classification of the players.”

Holland captain Tjerk Bogsdra says he is happy to be playing in Mallorca but realises that his country faces an uphill task.

“Everything is fine and we hope to win qualification against Spain who are the big favourites and have two players in the top ten in the world,” he said.

Amador Pons

The Spanish players of Cup Davis form the best team of the world of tennis, but to none of them them to have imported to be footballers. It is more, Nadal, Moyà and Ferrero it do not do nothing badly. After finalizing the Monday the morning session, Juan Carlos challenged to Rafael to play a party of fut-tennis and yesterday the Valencian one was measured Carlos, before initiating an intense training tenístico.

During the session of tomorrow of the day of yesterday Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moyà shared the trail of the Theater, while Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo occupied the trail of training. The Valencian one and the palmesano heated showing their endow like footballers and later they began the training, in which they had prominence the blows since the fund of the trail. They carried out various exercises to strike parallel and crusader so much of reverse as of right.

After rising some minutes to the network for volear and to heat the service, Ferrero and Moyà played two tie breaks. It is custom to carry out bets so that the loser have to carry out some punishment. Some times are canguros to jump the network, but yesterday they wagered to have to go since the line of fund to the network to four legs and barking. Al to finalize one to one, they played a tie break to decide that it finished gaining Moyà, and Ferrero, their coach and Arrese (that had wagered for the Valencian one) they had to comply their bet when some of the components of the Dutch team already they had arrived at the trail to begin their session of training.

SPAIN’s Juan Carlos Ferrero couldn’t explain what had just happened.

One minute he’s playing off in the final of the US Open and winning a Masters event in Madrid; the end-of-year No.1 ranking in his grasp and the tennis world at his feet.

The next, on November 10 in Houston, he’s back in the locker room after losing within an hour to David Nalbandian; his dreams of finishing No.1 reduced to paella.

“It is the first match in the whole year that I play like this,” Ferrero said at the time.

“You never know when it is going to come.”
Things didn’t get any better. Two nights later he lost to Andre Agassi and two nights after that to Roger Federer.

A day out from the Davis Cup final, it is with baited breath that Spain awaits to find out which Ferrero will walk on to Rod Laver Arena to play Lleyton Hewitt.

Will it be the 22-year-old “mosquito” who became the buzz at Roland Garros before playing three near-perfect sets to deny Hewitt in their quarter-final in New York.

Or will it be the fast-fading Spaniard who dragged himself around Houston like someone in need of a long siesta?

Such was Ferrero’s dismal showing at the end-of-year Tennis Masters Cup – and a sinus condition that he is said to have developed somewhere between Texas, southern California and Tullamarine Airport – that the media armada docked in Melbourne is rife with speculation he won’t even play.

For Hewitt, such talk is nonsense. Hewitt has instant recall when it comes to losses and remembers every point of his game against Ferrero at the US Open in New York.

“It is a big call not to play your world No.3,” Hewitt said this week.

“That (their US Open quarter-final) was as well as I have seen Juan Carlos play and also against Andre Agassi the following day.

“He is a tough player and getting better each year. He’s getting more and more successful on other surfaces.”

There is a certain likeness between Hewitt and Ferrero. Only one year separates them and both were prodigies, with their fathers playing central and ongoing roles in their careers.

Both have achieved a major career goal: Hewitt winning Wimbledon and Ferrero the French Open.

But their attitudes to the Davis Cup reveal Hewitt and Ferrero as the same tennis beast.

Like Hewitt, Ferrero’s Davis Cup debut at 19 was a baptism of fire, one he more than survived by beating Russia’s Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Since, he has constructed an imposing 11-3 singles record for Spain. Both men already have their names engraved on the cup but Ferrero has done the one thing in Davis Cup that Hewitt has not; leading his country to victory in a final.

Alex Corretja is confident that Spain’s leading singles player will be chosen to take the court tomorrow.

Corretja has good reason to be confident as the Spanish players were told the final team before yesterday’s practice session.

“Ferrero has showed already that he is a tremendous player,” Corretja said. “He is going to have his chance to play; he is going to do it right and he is prepared to do it.

“He has been playing terrific tennis through the whole year and I think, on grass, he has proved to himself he can beat good players at Wimbledon and that is going to give him some confidence to play and win, no matter what.”

According to Spain’s Davis Cup captain Juan Avendano, Ferrero is aware of what winning a Davis Cup in Australia would mean.

In Houston, Ferrero complained that he couldn’t do much more to increase interest in tennis in Spain, which suffers from an overwhelming national obsession with soccer.

This weekend is his chance.

Where there were only a handful of Spanish media in Houston, there are 42 accredited in Melbourne.

“For him, the real challenge is to win the Davis Cup outside of Spain,” Avendano said.

“Especially in Australia, is something really big, big, big.”

Juan Carlos Ferrero is confident Spain can brush aside France and move into the Davis Cup final after the Iberians’ hard-fought victory over Holland in the quarter-finals.

Spain defeated the Dutch 4-1, thanks largely to Ferrero’s marathon five-set victory against Martin Verkerk in Sunday’s singles match, a result that gave the home side an unassailable 3-1 lead in the tie and set them on the way to a 4-1 triumph.

“I am happy with being drawn against France, and it is always good to play at home,” said Ferrero.

“However, we are determined not become over-confident.”

Ferrero had to draw on all his inner resolve to overcome a determined Verkerk, who eventually succumbed under the strain of having completed a five-set doubles victory hours earlier.

Ferrero had to fight far harder than when the pair met in last year’s French Open final before finally emerging with a 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 4-6 7-5 6-1 victory.

“He played well, there’s no denying that,” said Ferrero after his win.

“It was a very even match, and I didn’t expect him to fall apart physically.

“I fought for every ball and I felt good. I always thought I would be able to get back into the game, and I did it with the help of the crowd.”

Spain face France, the 2001 Davis Cup winners, in September, with the clay courts of Alicante favourite to stage the semi-final tie.

6 April 2003

Spain will look forward with complete confidence to a home clash with Argentina in the semifinals of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas after completing a 5-0 victory over Croatia on Sunday.

Albert Costa claimed the fourth point for Spain with a commanding 63 64 success against Ivan Ljubicic, and Alex Corretja made it 5-0 by beating Mario Ancic 75 63. “Argentina have a very strong team on clay,” Spanish captain Jordi Arrese said. “I think it’s going to be tough but we will be playing at home and that’s a huge advantage for us.”
In Costa, Corretja, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya Spain have a formidable clay court line-up and they fulfilled predictions this weekend with a second successive whitewash win, following their 5-0 victory over Belgium in the first round.

Corretja and Costa were overlooked for the opening singles on Friday, when Ferrero beat Ancic and Moya overcame the big-serving Ljubicic, but the two Catalans clinched the third point against Ljubicic and Lovro Zovko in the doubles and were back on Sunday to complete the job.

Costa was first up against Ljubicic and the Catalan was quickly into his stride, taking an early break and consolidating for a 3-0 lead. Ljubicic served better for the remainder of the set but he could not put any pressure on Costa, who looks to be back close to the form that took him to the French Open title last year. Costa went on to take the first set with that solitary break and the Spaniard went a long way towards completing the win by breaking his opponent in the opening game of the second set.

The Croatian number one, mixing up aces, service winners and double faults, went from 30-0 up to break-point down as he fluffed a straightforward backhand and Costa capitalised with a fizzing crosscourt backhand return. Ljubicic, disgusted with his own performance, smacked his racket against one of the net posts and then flung it away. Ljubicic composed himself to force a break point in the next but Costa saved it and went on to clinch a simple victory with a crashing forehand winner down the line on the first of three match points in game 10.

Corretja did not enjoy quite such an easy ride against Ancic, who snatched an early break and quickly moved into a 5-2 lead. Ancic missed one set point in game eight, however, and Corretja took advantage of his let-off to win seven consecutive games to take the first set and move 2-0 ahead in the second. Corretja was never likely to let slip a 2-0 lead in front of a home crowd on clay and he duly completed victory to claim the fifth and final point and another satisfying weekend’s work for Spain.
