KEY BISCAYNE · The Nasdaq-100 Open lost its fifth top-10 woman plus French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero on a Sunday that saw five more names erased from the tournament draw.

Chanda Rubin, runner-up in 1996 and in the semifinals here a year ago, pulled out of the tournament with a knee injury she has been nursing since February.

Later in the day, Ferrero, No. 2 in the world behind Roger Federer, was officially declared out with the chicken pox he contracted a week and a half ago, before the tournament at Indian Wells.
Ferrero was leading No. 3 Andy Roddick of Boca Raton by 125 points in the ATP rankings going into Indian Wells, but even if Roddick can’t overtake him, and he probably won’t when the new rankings come out today, he’ll bump up to the No. 2 seed. That means if he faces Federer in what would be advertised as another blockbuster match, it would only be in the Nasdaq final.

Also out Sunday: No. 18 Patty Schnyder, No. 37 Felix Mantilla of Spain and No. 42 Felippo Volandri of Italy.

Chicken Pox Force Ferrero Out Of Miami
Juan Carlos Ferrero has withdrawn from this week’s Nasdaq-100 Open, suffering from a case of the chicken pox that forced him to pull out of the Pacific Life Open 10 days ago.

Spain’s Felix Mantilla, ranked No. 38, and 42nd-ranked Italian Filippo Volandri, also pulled out of the the tournament, which begins on Wednesday. Qualifying play is underway today at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, Florida.

An Australian Open semifinalist, Ferrero fell to Lleyton Hewitt in the Rotterdam final. He has not played since an opening-round setback to Gregory Carraz at the Marseille event in February.

The U.S. Open finalist is a capable hard-court player, but Ferrero has never surpassed the fourth round at the Nasdaq.

The absence of the second-ranked Spaniard means Andy Roddick assumes the second seed at this week’s Nasdaq-100 Open and could only meet top-ranked Roger Federer in the final.

19 March 2003

Juan Carlos Ferrero turned Wednesday to sundae at the Nasdaq-100 Open. The French Open finalist refused to melt beneath the searing heat as he delivered ice cream to fans from behind the counter at the Ben&Jerry’s booth in the food court.

“I love watching him play, so seeing him service ice cream is really exciting too,” one female fan said.

The third-ranked Ferrero wasn’t the only player to greet fans at the Ben&Jerry booth. Shortly after Ferrero finished his shift, Australian Open quarterfinalist Younes El Aynaoui stood in line to buy some ice cream and casually talked and joked with fans, who were also waiting in line.
